Being respected and having a feeling of belonging is the greatest experience you can have at any job.
I originally enjoyed a career in a group home working as a Human Service Counselor for 20 years.
I had always liked the thought of working in a grocery store and we always shopped at Sobeys. I was hired on the spot!
This is where I began, but I was only in this role for a few months.
The deli needed help and I was told I communicate very well, so into the deli I went for about 2 years.
At the same time that I was in the deli, I also did in-store demos. I managed a staff of about 10 to coordinate the demo obligations.
While here, I learned a lot about the business (like orders and shrinks). I enjoyed a lot of interaction with customers and I was known as being a staff member who really loved working at Sobeys.
Good bye hairnet, hat and rubber apron and hello to greeting and entertaining customers and CEOs! Our new Sobeys opened in December 2008 and my management team asked if I would be the Community Room Coordinator. It’s a great job meeting people like Bill McEwan along with teaching middle school students as part of a 6-week cooking program.
I am also currently working as the ECE. I’m part of a team from Head Office conducting a study on how engaged our staff are. It’s to help improve staff morale and work enjoyment.
Sobeys is a company that can provide a lot of learning opportunities and room for growth. If you want more, you work more and always remember that to get a little you have to give a little.
